This month's Fly Of The Month, the Deep Powder Minnow, uses some of our newest materials “DP Powder” and “DP Fly Foil". The "DP Powder" is a perfect granular non-toxic (tungsten) weighted mix that when applied with an epoxy will simulate many fly patterns. It can be added as an underbody to weigh most nymphs for fresh water applications, or as you will see it can be applied with epoxy to create a dramatic representation of baitfish.
The following pattern appropriately named the “Deep Powder Minnow” describes how these materials will enhance baitfish imitations. It will allow the fly to get down in the fishes feeding column, while attaining an outstanding baitfish profile. The “DP Fly Foil” will enhance and illuminate epoxy flies creating a dramatic representation of baitfish increasing the “hook up” rate you will experience. We do hope these products will allow you to catch more and bigger fish.
Step 1:
Insert the hook into the vice hooks point up. Tie in and advance the thread to the midpoint of the hook shank. Apply body materials starting with the slinky fiber then the flash material. To achieve the best profile using “LESS is BEST”. Colors for this pattern are discretionary but the lighter materials are the best representation for the underbody of the fly and the darker colors are best suited for the top or dorsal fin.
Step 2:
Work the materials toward the eye adding the darker dorsal fin representation on top and the peacock herl if desired. After placing all of the body materials on the hook using scotch tape to fan out the materials will enable you to easily perceive how the finished fly will look.
Step 3:
Apply a mixture of a small equal amount of “DP Powder” into a standard 1 to 1 ratio of 5 minute epoxy and apply it to the head of the fly.
Note: We recommend not placing the fly in a drier at this time. The added weight of the “DP Powder” combined with epoxy will prevent you from achieving the desired head if you are not attentive to control the fluidity of the epoxy during this curing stage. It is best to use a rotary vice and dress the fluid epoxy with your bodkin while turning it during the curing period. After an initial application you will achieve the desired result. As the “DP Powder” epoxy mixture is curing you will see when it has not fully hardened and yet is tacky to the touch. This is time to apply the next key material the “DP Fly Foil”. Transfer this luminous foil material to the tacky surface of the epoxy before it has fully cured. Place the “Witchcraft Eyes” on the fly and if desired color the foil to represent the same color characteristics attained in the rest of the body of the f
Step 4:
Place another fine finish coat of epoxy without the “DP Powder” to complete the fly which can now be place in a drier if desired. Your fly is now complete and we believe you will agree it is the best weighted minnow baitfish imitation. Try it and let us know what you think.
There are 17 materials required to create the The Deep Powder Minnow.
All of these materials combined will cost you $92.54.
